Eagle Radio – News – Farnborough autism charity forced to turn away families

The Mustard Seed Autism Trust has been forced to turn away families looking for support due to a lack of staff and funding.

Offering specialist therapy to autistic children in the area, the charity also provides support and advice to their families.

This week it has been announced that the organisation is having to close its waiting list due to a large number of referrals.

100 families are currently on the list – they could be waiting up to a year and a half to receive help.

Co-founder Francis Bland told Eagle that she is devastated to have to make this decision: “Not to be able to provide for them is just heart-breaking – we find it incredibly difficult.

“We would do anything, anything we could to ensure that we can give as much support to these families as we can.”

Francis explained that children with autism can experience severe anxiety, and families struggle to cope after receiving a diagnosis: “A large number of these children really, really do find it difficult to cope, and so a service like ours provides a lifeline.

“What will happen is these families will just carry on struggling and these difficulties will just keep getting bigger.”

The charity currently only has two full-time members of staff and small group of volunteers. They are desperately appealing for more volunteers and donations to help the organisation provide the support needed.
